Global Entry Experience
Global Entry is a fast pass for entering the United States, one of the Trusted Traveler Programs (TTPs), including TSA Pre, NEXUS, SENTRI, and FAST. For more details, you can visit the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website at https://ttp.cbp.dhs.gov/.

Global Entry Application Experience
I mainly share my experience, as international flights often require significant time spent on security checks and entry procedures. These programs aim to alleviate this burden and reduce the time spent on immigration and customs. From the chart, you can see that the fee for GE has increased by $20 compared to before. Some mid-to-high-end travel credit cards offer benefits to reimburse this fee. GE includes TSA Pre, so there’s no need to apply for TSA Pre separately.
When entering with a GE card, you can use the dedicated Global Entry lane and self-service kiosks set up at the airport (https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global-entry/locations) to clear customs. However, there is still a chance of being randomly selected for further inspection. Be honest when answering questions in the questionnaire, especially regarding whether you are carrying cash, fresh food, etc.
- If your receipt has an “X,” you will need to speak with a CBP officer.
- If your receipt has an “O,” it means you have declared some items and will need to go through the baggage inspection lane after collecting your luggage.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or green card holders. For other eligibility criteria, please refer to: https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global-entry/eligibility
Application Process
- Create a TTP Account: Currently, you need to link your account to login.gov to create a TTP account (https://ttp.cbp.dhs.gov).
- Pay the Fee: GE is valid for 5 years, averaging about $20-$25 per year (the fee increased on October 1, 2024). If you hold certain premium credit cards, remember to claim the reimbursement.
- Document Review: Once you see “conditionally approved,” you can schedule an interview.
- Schedule an Interview: Follow the prompts on the website to schedule an interview. In the Bay Area, you can go to SFO Airport.
- Print Interview Notification: This document will include your Pass ID.
- Bring Required Documents: Driver’s license, passport, proof of address (bank statement, utility bill, etc.).
- Enrollment on Arrival (EOA): Many airports, including SFO, offer EOA, where you can complete the interview upon arrival at the customs and border protection area without prior scheduling. https://www.cbp.gov/traveler-programs/global-entry/enrollment-arrival
- Same-Day Interviews: SFO sometimes offers same-day interviews for departing passengers. https://www.flysfo.com/passengers/services-amenities/expedited-travel/global-entry
After a successful interview, you will receive a card that you should carry with you during travel. You can also use the app to file declarations. Since GE includes TSA Pre, you can use the TSA Pre lanes for faster security screening at the airport.
In your journey, there is a special channel at the airport where you can proceed directly to the security check without having to wait in the regular queue. This not only saves time but also ensures a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience.
During your travels, this card and the accompanying app will become invaluable tools, assisting you in managing various unexpected situations and needs with ease. It’s crucial to keep your card safe and take full advantage of the app’s features so that when issues arise during your travels, you can respond quickly and efficiently. Remember to always abide by all travel regulations and requirements to ensure a safe and successful trip.
In an American perspective, we value efficiency and convenience, so utilizing this special channel for security checks can be a real-time-saver. The card and app are designed to make your travel experience more seamless, so make sure to take advantage of these resources to make your trip as smooth as possible. Remember to be responsible and respectful of all travel rules, as this will help ensure that your trip goes off without a hitch.
Enjoy your travels!
